The Harvard Ophthalmology Ocular Regenerative Medicine Institute expanded its educational offerings last summer when Michael Young, PhD, developed a STEM program to provide internships and learning opportunities in regenerative ophthalmology to interested students at Revere High School.Through this program, faculty from Schepens Eye Research Institute of Massachusetts Eye and Ear give lectures.
The PhD Program strongly encourages interaction with colleagues and peers within this highly multidisciplinary field and PhD students will be acquainted with the international perspective of the field of regenerative medicine through frequent contacts with colleagues from abroad, regularly invited international guest speakers and the encouragement to participate in international meetings.
PhD students enrolled in the program thus profit from extensive experience in two different though complementary areas: they are part of a lively and diverse scientific community in regenerative medicine as well as integrated into a graduate school hosting a diversity of different programs with long years of experience in teaching graduate students from a large variety of backgrounds.
George Q. Daley, dean of Harvard Medical School and the Caroline Shields Walker Professor of Medicine at HMS, is an internationally recognized leader in stem cell science and cancer biology. He is also a longtime member of the HMS faculty whose work spans the fields of basic science and clinical medicine.
Kenneth S. Zaret, Ph.D. is the Joseph Leidy Professor in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. He is also the Director of UPenn’s Institute for Regenerative Medicine (2014-). Dr. Zaret did his graduate work on yeast genetics with Dr. Fred Sherman in the Department of Radiation Biology and Biophysics at the University.
